![]() It is quite a meager start, with just a town center that has an impressive coal-powered propeller system keeping it afloat. In the game’s narrative, you start as a group of people looking to fulfill a prophecy to bring back an old airborne kingdom that united the cities on the ground, through a Grand Council established in this flying city. Without further ado, lets fly off in our Airborne Kingdom! Soaring to New HeightsĪs you may be able to tell from the name, Airborne Kingdom starts you off in a flying city – well, not so much of a city at the start, you must build your way up there. From the Arabian Nights/Steampunk-themed mashup theme (this is an aesthetic I adore and would love to see more of), to the beautiful mosaic board game-like world below, this lovely little gem found a way to pull me in hard and only ever so slightly loosen its grip. It has engaged me unlike other city builders in recent memory, because of how its exquisite blend of mechanics come together so well in such a beautiful package. Surprisingly, this review took a bit longer to write as I could not pull myself away from playing the game. Seeing as how this is a flying city, “unconventional” is certainly the right word. Considering that my last review was for Per Aspera, another city ( ahem *colony*) builder, Airborne Kingdom, developed and published by The Wandering Band, is a continuation of my fascination and current enjoyment with unconventional city builders. Also keep in mind that if people leave your airship, you will have to go around and find people in different settlements that are ready to migrate to your floating city. Here at eXplorminate, where we are dedicated to the 4X, strategy, tactics, and (now apparently) city-building game genres, I am now dubbing this time the “ Winter of City Builders”. Instead, you need to keep in mind the resources you have at your disposal and be sure you have enough to fulfil the needs of the citizens you already have onboard before you think about taking on any more people. If you start overcrowding your airship by taking too many people onboard, the citizens will start to become unhappy when you can't adequately meet their needs. You can keep track of your citizens and housing at the top of the screen and the game prompts you when you need to build more houses. Provide residence according to the population count. You can stack up the house blocks up to 3 stories from the tech tree, you can also stack up the warehouses if you have unlocked them from the tech tree. This means making sure you provide housing for each of them. Your floating kingdom relies on its citizens to keep it running, and to keep their satisfaction level high you need to fulfill their needs. Coal is collected by finding coal deposits on the ground and if you run out of it your city will descend until it crashes to the ground, ending the game. Coal powers your city and allows you to do this, so make sure that as soon as you access the tech tree you go to the coal storage option and increase it by 200%. In Airborne Kingdom, you will be constantly fighting gravity to keep your city and its civilization residing upon the sky. You can prevent this happening whenever you introduce a new infrastructure to your airship by researching at the tech tree under 'Lift' so you are able to introduce new attachments like balloons, rotors, wings, and fans to compensate. You need to ensure that your floating city has enough Lift at all times, otherwise it will descend to the ground and crash. It is crucial in Airborne Kingdom that you regularly check your Lift by hovering over the 'Lift' option. Take advantage of this skill whenever your floating city loses balance or has a tilt that needs fixing. Your floating city has a center of gravity, and this skill enables you to move facilities away from the tilting point so that you rebalance the airship. Water filters will boost the condenser in its range, and windmills will boost any farm in its range. You will also get a boost if you place windmills and farms together. If you place the food and water buildings close together, you will be able to acquire a boost in Airborne Kingdom. Place Food and Water Buildings Close Together For example, in the first realm you will be able to unlock farms and water condensers which will provide you with unlimited food and water resources, things that are hard to acquire in the subsequent realms. ![]() It is therefore essential that you take your time and make sure you get everything you need before you move onto the next realm. There are three realms in the Airborne Kingdom to unlock and each provides you with opportunities to unlock valuable resources which you may not be able to get in the other two realms.
